This weekend the Wilmington Hammerheads hope to snap their long streak of losses when they play the LA Blues at home this Saturday at Legion Stadium. (As an aside, this is our first of very few Saturday home matches this season.)
Am I pessimistic? Am I hopeful? To be honest with you all, I’m not even sure anymore.
I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t at least a little worried. Our last clash against the Blues left us on the end of a 4-0 loss with a nasty red card awarded to Paul Nicholson within the first minute of the game. Going into this match on Saturday we’ll also be without the defensive prowess of Gareth Evans, who earned a red card against Charleston last week. Our back line has been noticeably laggy as of late so this is most likely going to be a concern going into Saturday’s match. And our keeper situation is still a big question mark. This has been a pretty hot topic of debate during the past week for many Port City Firm members and Hammerheads fans alike, with many differing opinions and stances on the issue. I’m not privy to roster choices in the least, but I assure you that whatever the lineup turns out to be this weekend will surely be more food for thought.
However, the Blues have a pair of back to back matches this weekend and will be coming off a game on Friday night against the Kickers, so we will definitely have that fatigue working in our favor. (Along with maybe a little jet lag.) With that said the Blues are also sitting 5th in the standings right now, and are a team that can’t be discounted and will require all of our players to be playing their top game to have a chance. Our boys have had a week to rest up and hopefully get their heads in the game a little more so here’s to hoping practices have been going well and that desire for a win is beating strongly. The Hammerheads desperately need to secure a win to turn this season (and spirits) around.
