USL PROlog: Week 1

Week 1: March 19 to March 25, 2014

For the third season, from Union Dues to Reckless Challenge we will be having this weekly feature USL PRO log. The log highlights the top performance from the previous week’s action, who to look for in the upcoming week, and what matches to watch.

Normally at Reckless Challenge we like to go against the grain but that can not always be done. This week there were only two league fixtures, which did not provide many options from which to award the best performance of the week, so we also gave the honors to Kenny Walker. LA Galaxy II’s inaugural USL PRO match included many highlights, but the most outstanding came from the Los Dos midfielder. Walker scored a late first half goal off a rebound to give his side a 2-1 lead. In the second half, he contributed an assist to teammate Daniel Steres via corner kick to give the Los Dos a 3-1 lead which would be the final result of their first league fixture.

This weekend the Pittsburgh Riverhounds open their season against Orlando City at Disney World. One of the Riverhounds new signings this season is Joseph Ngwenya who played for the Richmond Kickers last season. The Zimbabwe native will be joining the stellar Riverhounds’ attack force of Matt Dallman and Jose Angulo who combined for 17 goals last season. Ngwenya had nine goals and five assists last season, his contributions could give Pittsburgh one of the best attacks in USL PRO. Look for Joseph Ngwenya this weekend against the defending champions in what could be a playoff quality fixture.

This weekend there are four USL PRO league fixtures including a couple potential playoff match-ups. First off on Saturday are two huge matches to begin the season, Charleston Battery will be hosting Richmond Kickers at Blackbaud Stadium, and the Pittsburgh Riverhounds will be traveling to Disney Wide World of Sports Complex to face title holders Orlando City SC. Both of those matches begin at 7:30 EST; following LA Galaxy II will host Sacramento Republic FC at 10:30 EST. This match marks Sacramento Republic FC’s inaugural USL PRO game against a Los Dos team that is coming of a statement victory last week over Orange County Blues FC.

On Sunday, Dayton Dutch Lions FC will travel to the state-of-the-art Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey to play the New York Red Bull Reserves. This is the first of many USL PRO-MLS Reserves inter-league matches, each team plays two matches against MLS reserve teams. The Dayton Dutch Lions have made some interesting acquisitions this off-season and will be looking to prove themselves against a well-coached New York Red Bulls Reserve team.
